in god we trust
2012
This work reflects on the fragility of the global economic system through a critical look at the symbolic value of money, specifically the US dollar. The phrase “In God We Trust,” printed on every bill, becomes an emblem of contemporary faith: an almost religious confidence placed in a currency no longer backed by gold but by a sistem of printing and debt. This piece denounces the paradox of a global economy sustained by a currency imposed by the most powerful country in the world. At the same time, it engages with the history of the Mexican peso, marked by constant devaluations and crises. The dollar is set against the peso as “safe and reliable,” when in truth it too is highly vulnerable in the present moment. We are immersed in a bubble that will inevitably have to burst. Through this piece, viewers are invited to question structures of power, the symbols that govern us, and the thin line between faith, economics, and collective manipulation.
