cuatro vueltas

2009

This piece captures an everyday, universal gesture: the movement of feet while walking. Through these images, the work reflects on the human journey as a lived experience. Each ordinary step, repeated millions of times, takes on another dimension when revealed as part of an unnoticed, unconscious voyage. The piece consists of 40 images depicting feet in motion, exploring the human journey as a vital experience repeated millions of times over a lifetime. This piece invites the viewer to wonder how many kilometers we cover over a lifetime. The result is surprising: we walk, on average, the equivalent of 4 laps around the world if we live to eighty. Here is the calculation: it is estimated that a human being walks 176,000 km in a lifetime if they reach the age of eighty. A meter is roughly equivalent to two human steps. 176,000 km, or 176 million meters, adds up to 352 million steps. The planet measures 40,000 km, or 40 million meters, around its equator — that is, 80 million steps when doubled. Now, if we divide the total number of steps walked in a lifetime — 352 million — by the number of steps around the equator (80 million), we arrive at a figure of 4.4 laps around the planet.
